Staff Farm: StrongHeart Farms

Eleanor Babcock & Pearce Jensen

About

Staff Farm: All farm students at Big River Farms benefit from working with staff who are highly experienced in organic growing techniques. Two staff maintain market garden plots on site where students can see an example of how to manage weeds and control pests, and how to grow a diversity of crops on a larger scale.

StrongHeart Farms is a regenerative organic vegetable farm operated by Pearce Jensen, Big River Farms operations manager, and Eleanor Babcock, Big River Farms caretaker.

In addition to overseeing the many practical tasks needed to keep a farm running, Eleanor and Pearce assist with educational programs and mentorship of new farmers.

Eleanor and Pearce’s first experience in the world of organic farming was working at a “full diet” farm in Oregon. That farm provided customers with vegetables, grains, meat and dairy, pork and chickens. They would someday like to emulate that style of farming. For now, they raise herbs, vegetables, and pigs.
Eleanor and Pearce are in their 4th year of farming at Big River. At their 1-acre farm they prioritize growing food that is flavorful, nutrient-dense, and chemical-free, while giving back to the soil and our earth’s ecological systems.
